Escapees Glaciers and Fjords Hangout is coming to Stoney Creek RV Park in Seward, AK!
Gateway to the splendor of the Kenai Peninsula
The Alaskan port city of Seward occupies a breathtaking area shaped by glaciers, nestled between mountains and the ocean. During the seven-day Glaciers & Fjords Hangout, hosted by Joann and Charlie Kavanagh SKP# 132374 and co-hosted by Lisa and Jason Reich, SKP# 118627, you’ll have the opportunity to explore this amazing region by water and on land.
You’ll begin the Hangout by exploring the abundant wildlife and massive glaciers in Resurrection Bay on an all-day Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise. An onboard naturalist will narrate your 7 1/2-hour journey and act as your guide to the spectacular sights, including two active tidewater glaciers as well as whales, harbor seals, Steller sea lion colonies, puffins, eagles, and rookeries of thousands of nesting seabirds. A deli lunch (including a vegetarian option) is included.
During your afternoon at the unique Alaska SeaLife Center, a world-class, non-profit research institution and public aquarium, you’ll discover the importance of understanding and maintaining the integrity of Alaska’s oceans, as you observe and interact with sea animals in natural-looking habitats.
Accompanied by a Kenai Fjords National Park ranger, you’ll take a 2.2 mile hike right up to the toe of stunning Exit Glacier, where you’ll experience the dense, blue ice while listening to it crackle. You’ll also attend a ranger presentation about the area, and have an opportunity to explore the Exit Glacier Nature Center.
You’ll explore the town of Seward, the official “Mural Capital of Alaska”, as part of a team-based scavenger hunt through the colorful murals that bring life to Seward’s unique historical characters and events. You’ll also visit the Seward Museum, where you’ll learn how the town was devastated by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake–the second most powerful tremor recorded in world history–in 1964.
You’ll also hike the scenic Tonsina Creek Trail, a 3.4 mile round-trip that climbs along the shoreline of Resurrection Bay. Look for salmon spawning in the waters of Tonsina Creek and walk through a beautiful hardwood forest that transitions into a wet northern rainforest, then relax for a while on the beach before heading back.
There are so many things to do around Seward that we couldn’t possibly include them all in one week! So instead, we’ll have a day for you to Choose Your Own Adventure. Want to fish in a fjord? Kayak around icebergs in a glacial lagoon? Take a wilderness dog sled ride? You can select one of these activities or others–ranging from professionally-guided outings to free hikes–from a menu of suggestions that we’ll provide to you before the Hangout.
You’ll get to enjoy all of these activities plus dinner at the Seward Brewing Company, an evening bar crawl with the locals after the cruise ship crowds have left, potluck meals in camp, and much more at the Glaciers & Fjords Hangout!
